Afghan Natural

Malta’s First Afghan Restaurant — in Ħamrun Since 2017

When Afghan Natural opened in April 2017, it brought a cuisine Malta had never had: kabuli pilau jewelled with carrots and raisins, slow lamb shank, kebabs and naan from a traditional clay tandoor — on Ħamrun’s main street, with a balcony over the road.

About Afghan Natural Malta

A First for Malta, on Ħamrun’s Main Street

Afghan Natural Food opened on St Joseph High Street in April 2017 — reported at the time as Malta’s first Afghan restaurant, founded by Safi Abdul Haq and Hameed Rehaman. Nearly a decade on, it remains the island’s address for a cuisine built on rice, slow-cooked lamb and bread from the clay oven.

The kitchen works around a traditional Afghan tandoor: reviewers note the bread is freshly made on the premises, and the menu runs from kabuli pilau and lamb shank to kebabs, chicken tikka and tandoori chicken. Seating climbs upstairs, where a balcony looks over Ħamrun’s main street — a room reviewers return to, with recent visits recorded through 2025.

For halal diners it is a known stop: TripAdvisor lists Halal among the restaurant’s special diets, and reviewers describe driving to Ħamrun specifically after hearing they would find halal food here — and finding, in one reviewer’s words, “this gem of an Afghan place.” The restaurant does not serve alcohol.
