Turkish Kebab Houses in Malta — Halal Doner, Pide & Where to Find Çoban Salatası (2026)

Turkish food is the backbone of Malta’s halal scene. Doner shops and kebab houses sit on almost every busy street in the tourist towns, and for many Muslim visitors they are the first halal meal after landing. But not every Turkish restaurant in Malta is halal, and two dishes visitors keep searching for — çoban salatası and mercimek köfte — are surprisingly hard to find by name. This guide gives you the honest picture.

Quick Answer: Posh Turkish is Malta’s verified-halal Turkish flagship, with six branches and halal lamb, chicken and beef. Kebab Factory runs seven branches island-wide. Çoban salatası is not listed by name on any Malta menu — the closest match is the fresh-salad selection with a doner plate. Mercimek köfte is sold only by a home bakery in St Paul’s Bay.

What Is Çoban Salatası — and Where to Find It in Malta?

Çoban salatası, or shepherd’s salad, is one of Turkey’s classic meze dishes: finely diced tomato, cucumber, green pepper, onion and parsley, dressed with olive oil and lemon. It is the fresh, crunchy counterpoint to a rich doner plate — and it is one of the most searched Turkish dishes in Malta, with 193 searches in three months on Bing alone.

Here is the honest answer: no Turkish restaurant in Malta that we could verify lists çoban salatası by name on its menu. We checked Malta’s Wolt listings, TripAdvisor menus and Google results — every menu naming the dish belongs to a restaurant outside Malta.

What you can get is the same salad, served as part of your meal. At Posh Turkish, doner plates come with a choice of fresh salads — the Eastern Energizer includes cucumber, tomato and onion salad, and the Campus Hub branch lists 30 to choose from. At Kebab Factory, wraps include three salads and plates five. At Konak Kebab in Valletta’s Is-Suq tal-Belt, there is a build-your-own salad bar. Order a doner plate, load it with the tomato-cucumber-onion salads, add lemon — and you are eating çoban salatası in everything but name.

What Is Mercimek Köfte — and Where to Find It in Malta?

Mercimek köfte are Turkish red lentil patties: red lentils and fine bulgur, flavoured with tomato and pepper paste, herbs and onion, served cold wrapped in lettuce with lemon. They are naturally vegetarian and vegan, and a much-loved meze across Turkey.

Again, the honest answer: you will not find mercimek köfte on a restaurant menu in Malta yet. The only seller we found in Malta is Vaklavia Bakes & Desserts, a home bakery in St Paul’s Bay, which sells homemade mercimek köftesi to order via Instagram and Facebook DM — announced in July 2026 and again in catering trays in October 2026. It is a home-based seller, not a restaurant, and no price is published — order by DM. For now, Vaklavia is the only place in Malta we found selling it.

Posh Turkish — Malta’s Verified-Halal Turkish Flagship

Posh Turkish is the anchor of Malta’s Turkish scene and the one place we can call verified halal without hesitation. Its own wording is clear: “We offer a large variety of halal meat (lamb, chicken or beef) options from the grill section; kebab, doner and kofte.” TripAdvisor lists Halal under Special Diets, and the chain’s own Instagram says “100% halal”. Six branches are verified on Wolt — Gżira, Campus Hub in Msida, Qormi, Żabbar (as “Ottoman by Posh Turkish”), Birżebbuġa and Mosta — with Bugibba also listed on the chain’s Instagram.

The menu is the deepest Turkish menu on the island. From the Gżira branch on Wolt: Doner Box Special (chicken, fries, sweet sauce) €11.50; Eastern Energizer (chicken doner, couscous, tabbouleh, cucumber, tomato and onion salad) €14.85; Lamb Adana Kebab €16.70; Chicken Doner Plate (six salads and pita) €16.10; Chicken Doner Tombik €10.95. The pide range — boat-shaped flatbread — runs from Margherita €10.95 and Funghi €12.10 to BBQ Chicken Doner €14.40, Posh Special €15.55 and Lamb Doner €16.70, and Posh Pizza starts at €12.10. Baklava trays also feature in coverage of the chain.

Two honest caveats: the Posh Special and Turkish Pepperoni pides list pepperoni and salami — the halal statement covers lamb, chicken and beef grill meat, so don’t assume those items are halal. And TripAdvisor lists Posh as serving alcohol, so the halal claim is about the meat, not the venue. The Gżira branch keeps late hours (Monday to Thursday 11:00–02:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00–03:00, Sunday 11:00–02:00) and scores 9.2 out of 10 on Wolt. Phone for Gżira: +356 2134 1866. Kebab Factory — Seven Branches, Doner All Day

Kebab Factory is Malta’s Turkish fast-food chain, founded in 2019, with seven branches: Msida, Mellieħa, Ħamrun, San Ġwann, Paceville, St Julian’s and Valletta. Our restaurants directory presents it as “100% Halal — Trusted halal ingredients”, and we keep that wording here. A TripAdvisor reviewer at the Mellieħa branch wrote that “the food was halal which was one of the main reasons we visited”, but we found no halal statement on the chain’s own website, and TripAdvisor lists the St Julian’s branch as serving alcohol — so ask staff directly if certification matters to you.

The menu, from the chain’s official site: İskender Kebab €18.90; Chicken Doner Wrap €9.50; Chicken Doner Pita €9.50; Chicken Doner Platter €13.90; Beef Minced Doner Wrap €9.50; Beef Doner Wrap €10.50; Beef Doner Platter €17.90; Chicken Shish Kebab Wrap €10.90. The menu also runs to lahmacun, Turkish pizza, falafel, halloumi, baklava, Turkish rice pudding, Turkish tea and coffee, ayran, frozen doner and Turkish breakfast platters. Delivery is via Bolt Food only.

More Turkish Kebab Houses Worth Knowing

Moo’s Kebab, Gżira (177 The Strand) is the other verified-halal Turkish spot we found. TripAdvisor’s listing says “Halal Food with Certification”, Zabihah calls it “Fully halal”, and HalalTrip says “the food served is entirely Halal”. It serves kebab, pides, lahmacun and pizzas, including a “Halal Pepperoni (Sucuk)” somun toast — though the listing also mentions alcohol, so the halal claim covers the food.

Konak Kebab, Valletta sits inside Is-Suq tal-Belt, the Valletta food market — not St Julian’s, as some listings wrongly say. It is known for kebabs, shawarma, falafel plates with salads, hummus and kısır, and lamb chops, plus a build-your-own salad bar. Our dedicated Konak page lists it as a halal Turkish stall inside the market. Hours are 11:00–23:00.

Gün Turkish Kebab, Birkirkara (Triq tal-Herba — not Valletta, as some listings wrongly say) is a reviewers’ favourite for its mixed shish plate, generous portions and good value. It scores 4.6 out of 5 and stays open 10:00–02:00 daily. Halal status is unconfirmed — ask the restaurant before ordering. Phone: +356 9999 8963. See our Gün page.

Istanbul Kebab House, Sliema (89 Triq Rodolfu) calls itself “the very first kebab restaurant chain in Malta, since 1991”. Lamb doner wraps, Turkish pides, salads and Turkish tea, with generous portions and friendly staff. Our dedicated page lists it as halal, and its hours are reported differently in different places, so treat late-night hours as reported rather than guaranteed.

A La Turca, San Ġwann (Triq Tal-Balal) is a newer Turkish and Mediterranean restaurant: kebabs, pita breads, wraps, pizzas, soups, hot plates, desserts, Turkish tea and coffee. Our dedicated page categorises it as a halal restaurant. One note: its own Instagram also advertises pepperoni pizzas, so if that matters to you, ask the restaurant directly before ordering.

Halal Notes — Read Before You Order

Listed as halal on our site: Posh Turkish, Moo’s Kebab, Millenium Kebab, EFE Kebab, Kebab Factory (directory wording: 100% halal ingredients), Konak, Istanbul Kebab House, A La Turca and Kebab Ji. Unconfirmed — ask the restaurant: Gün, Alem, Antalya Kebab and Halo Kebabs & Tacos. And one rule for all of them: “halal meat” and “alcohol-free venue” are not the same thing in Malta. Several places serving halal meat also serve alcohol. If an alcohol-free setting matters to you, ask before you sit down, not after you order. If baklava is what brought you here, our halal desserts guide covers where to find it, and our Pakistani restaurants guide covers the desi side of Malta’s halal scene.
